Animation is, first and foremost, an often complex artistic language that transcends technical intent. Throughout history, it has often been reduced to an entertainment tool and delegitimized to its artistic point, but its expressive potential reveals something that manipulates time, space and visual matter in a unique way. This article starts from an understanding of animation as an autonomous and rich form of expression, with issues aligned with visual culture that even predates photographic cinema. Through a brief historical and aesthetic approach, it investigates how animation has been consolidated as an artistic language, especially since the modern avant-garde of the 20th century with the experimental use of Cubist artist Fernand Léger with his work ‘Ballet Mécanique’ (1924), which highlights its technical and conceptual specificities and aims to highlight its functionality and fundamentality as a form of sensitive representation, as well as its contribution to contemporary art and visual thinking.
