In this text, we propose a brief reflection on the presence of archives as both material and theme in contemporary art. We begin with an overview of some exhibitions in which the figure of the archival artist emerges, raising the issue of the historical specificity of the recent turn to archives in art. We then approach the topic from a theoretical perspective, mapping out some concepts advanced by philosophy and art criticism in relation to the archive. In dialogue with the texts of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Jacques Derrida, and Hal Foster, we propose some reflections which, far from exhausting the subject, aim to raise questions that highlight the complexity of the theme beyond its material dimension.
