Detachment from beliefs in the making: materiality in the process of creating an artist's book

Given the various definitions of artist's book, one aspect seems to get close to a consensus among researchers and scholars on the subject: this object would not function in any way but the format proposed. Thus, in the process of creating that type of book, the constructs mutually create the meanings of the artwork. Each aspect gets its importance in the game of meanings accompanied by the other aspect. From this perspective, we believe that the artist must be available to get into a creative process where associations might occur along the experimentation, in its pace. In order to enhance the creativity, recording the experimentation is a practice that helps to make each stage of the creative process part of the result. Besides, we discuss the role of memory, because, despite its creative potential, feeling free from concerns about materiality can be fundamental to get rid of conventions and to create surprising things. This text is the result of reflections that comes from the dialogue between three visual artists and academic researchers who focus on studying the creative processes of artist’s books.
