This article intends to address the prescriptions on the administration and control of the slave labor present in the thought of Columella in his treatise On Agriculture (De Re Rustica). Thus, our hypothesis is that influenced by the Stoic philosophy these prescriptions aims to stimulate the hierarchy within the slave squad through competition. On the one hand, competition allows the distribution of jobs and benefits to be based on criteria of technical capacity of slaves, on the other hand it strengthens the power of these owners, thus avoiding the formation of a joint action of these workers against the interests of the owners and, therefore, for better working conditions which were not restricted to individualized but also collective promotion.
