Résumé

This paper comparatively examines visual representations of Afro-migrants in the Brazilian tabloid Super Notícia (SN) and the South African Daily Sun (DS). Drawing on Multimodality Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis, it examines a corpus of images published in 2015 to uncover how race, nationality, and agency are visually constructed. Results indicate that the DS associates migrants with distance, policing, and restricted agency, whereas SN grants greater visibility through paternalistic frames of suffering and charity. In each case, visual choices reproduce national hierarchies while restricting migrant self-representation. The final discussion briefly considers implications of this research for photojournalism teaching.
