The enigma of Amigara Fault, by Junji Ito: nuances of an ecoGothic narrative

It explores the notion of ecoGothic in the manga The enigma of the Amigara Fault, by Japanese manga artist Junji Ito. We seek to understand this subgenre of horror fiction, identifying its relevance in contemporary pop culture and in Ito's work based on its relationship with concepts by Morton (2015) and Haraway (2023). In addition, we compare the manga to two non-fiction works by filmmaker Werner Herzog, seeking to demonstrate that the ecoGothic worldview is not limited to works of fiction. We believe that Ito and Herzog work with similar notions, especially regarding the indifference of the natural world towards human beings. For this last objective, we seek assistance from Mello et al (2018).
