The representation of black women in Run for in, by Marcelo D’ Salete (2018

Abstract

The object of study will be the compilation Run for it, by Marcelo D’ Salete (2018), which deals with the resistance of black people to enslavement in Brazil between 1534 and 1888, the year of abolition. Of the four stories, three are selected: “Calunga”, “Sumidouro” and “Cumbe”. The aim is to verify, by a comparative and interpretative analysis, how black women are portrayed in these narratives from the perspective of an Afro-descendant. The aim is to show how the language of comics has been used to characterize and represent black female characters. The theoretical basis is constituted by Acevedo (1990), Ramos (2010), Eisner (2010), and Cagnin (2014) for the characterization of the language of comics; Mattoso (1990), Moura (1990), Hooks (2018), and Chinen (2019) to understand the context of enslavement and the role of women during the colonial period; Machado (2018) on women, body, and motherhood; Lopes (2012) and Moura (2004) on African terms. It was observed that the women portrayed in the stories, in addition to fulfilling the workday, experienced different levels of subjection and oppression: to their “master” and to their partner.
