Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the news values present in the coverage of The New York Times about Brazilian soccer when the Brazilian team is defeated and so discuss the importance given by an international newspaper to the most widespread sport in Brazil. To this end, we selected the news about Brazilian's national team matches at the 2014 World Cups in Brazil and 2018 in Russia, specifically referring to the moments of elimination of the championship. In the methodological path, we used Silva's proposal (2014) to classify the news values. We found nine news articles focused on the Brazilian team, eight referring to the year 2014 and one in 2018, among them we registered the news values as surprise, tragedy/drama, entertainment/curiosity, impact and justice.
