This article aims to present and contextualize a multi-method approach for characterizing and analyzing public intraurban free spaces (IUFS). The methodology springs from the premise that the categorization, spatialization and characterization of IUFSs contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of public life. The operational stage of the methodology is described, including characterization of formal and functional arrangements, appropriations, behaviors and interactions between users of both circulation and recreational IUFSs. Three of the methods are quantitative with and without user interaction and one is qualitative with user interaction. The data collected will aid designers to revert precarious urban planning and landscape conditions currently observed in the city. The methods can be replicated with other categories of public IUFSs and in other cities, aiming to promote landscape design guidelines qualified in terms of recreation, leisure, and thus promoting real needs of the community and the physical environmental.Downloads
