Abstract

Points a histórical data about the school library in Brazil. The inaugural landmark is the Jesuits education. The political and religious dimenson and as the finalizing march the establishment of royal classes, the expulsion of the jesuits and the closure of their colleges and libraries. Based on a literature review, it reports the emergence of the firts libraries in schools, their relationship with catechesis and the education of indians and colonists; the formation of their collections and the importance of the didactic material produced by the priests and their influence on education even after the expulsion of the orderm in 1759, by Marques Pombal.
