Collective action and political participation: experiences of young people in the transition from adolescence to adulthood

Abstract

This article discusses some results of a research that investigated the participation practices of fteen people of 19-year-old, former students of two state schools in the city of São Paulo. In 2020, semi-structured interviews were carried out individually with each of these Young people with the aim of rescuing their experiences of participation as high school students, mapping their participatory practices after completing high school and identifying the meanings attributed to their experiences in the passage from adolescence to adulthood. Here, the common sense discourse that young people are politically apathetic is rejected: the interviewees' reports show that these young people are part of a broader process of reconguration of collective actions and political participation, which seeks to preserve autonomy, authenticity and the subjectivity of individuals, in a context of diversication and fragmentation of social experience.
