Resumen

A clear understanding of the role of staff groups has been hampered by a lack of knowledge about the role of those groups in the decision-making process. The sheer complexity of present-day organizations makes it impossible, for the individual at line positions and with the responsibility for decision-making, to integrate and coordinate all activities without the assistance of professionallytrained people. This article describes and discusses the role of staff groups in management, identifying their presence in the following stages of the decison-making process. (1) ellaboration, (2) formalization, and (3) follow-up of a decision previously made.
