Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of functional training (TF) on the functional capacity (CF) of patients in a phase 3 cardiac rehabilitation program (PRC). The sample consisted of 13 patients of both sexes, aged between 54 and 81 years, who progressed from phase 2 to phase 3 in a PRC in the city of Santa Maria/RS. The TF took place twice a week (45 minutes each session) and had a total duration of 6 months (48 sessions), with each session containing a warm-up part (5 minutes of walking), functional exercises (3 sets of 6 to 7 exercises, arranged in a circular fashion) and cool-down (5 minutes of flexibility and relaxation exercises). For the evaluations, the Shuttle Run, Tandem Walk Test and the 6-Minute Walk Test were applied, before the beginning and after the 48 TF sessions. After the reassessments, a significant increase in the performance of the Shuttle Run test was observed, while in the Tandem Walk Test and 6 Minute Walk Test there was maintenance of performance. It is possible to conclude that TF can promote the increase of CF in patients with heart disease by increasing agility, as well as maintaining levels of dynamic balance and aerobic resistance.
