Abstract

The objective of the present study was to map and identify the profile of existing sports clubs, as well as the perception of athletes and coaches regarding the health promotion strategies implemented in sports clubs. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in the context of amateur sports clubs. Specific eligibility criteria were considered for clubs, coaches, and athletes. Data collection took place in two stages: (1) mapping and contacting sports clubs; and (2) contacting coaches and athletes. Online questionnaires were used for data collection. The information was presented descriptively. The study included a total of 12 amateur clubs, as well as seven coaches and 11 athletes. The clubs have, on average, 3 years of operation, with a mean of 35 athletes, and two training sessions per week. Regarding the involvement of sports clubs with the community, 75% reported carrying out some activity with the external community. Among the actions carried out, the following stand out: collection and donation of food, toys, and clothing; introductory sports workshops; and competitive events. Regarding health promotion strategies, 66.7% of the clubs reported implementing some action. Most coaches and athletes indicated that they agree that clubs develop health promotion activities, except in relation to the provision of adapted sports practices, the existence of staff dedicated to members’ health care, and regulations concerning health-related behaviors, such as alcohol or drug abuse and healthy eating. Despite the small sample size, the research showed that sports clubs report carrying out health promotion actions; however, these activities are not incorporated into the club structure, but rather are characterized as isolated actions.
