Resumen

Bariatric surgery can be used as a treatment for severe obesity, with several benefits in addition to weight loss, such as remission of comorbidities and reduced mortality. In the literature, some studies also report improvements in the quality of life (QoL) of patients undergoing this treatment. However, there is still no consensus about the positive outcome in all domains related to Brazilian patients general QOL. Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess QoL and associated factors by comparing patients before and after bariatric surgery. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 289 adults from an Obesity Program in Fortaleza, Ceará (81 still waiting for undergoing surgery and 208 who had already undergone it). A questionnaire was adopted to collect sociodemographic data, as well as the WHOQOL-bref one was used in relation to the QoL. For analysis, the Mann-Whitney and Poisson dataset tests were used. The individuals who had undergone the surgery had a better QoL in general, physical, psychological, and environmental domains, when compared to the patients who were still waiting to undergo surgery. Among pre-surgical patients, active patients had better general QoL and in the physical, and environmental domains, while those with comorbidities got a smaller score on physical domain. Whereas, in the post-surgical group, active individuals had a higher score in general QoL and in the physical, psychological and social domains. Those who did not have comorbidities had better QoL in all domains. It was concluded that the individuals who underwent bariatric surgery had a better QoL, which was associated with physical activity practice (>150 minutes/week) and the absence of comorbidities.
