Abstract

Corruption is a rising issue in world governments, one of the factors associated with public governance and socioeconomic development. Considering the world scenario, the present research aims to investigate how aggregate corruption influences the socioeconomic indicators - Gross Domestic Product and Human Development Index - of the Mercosur countries. For that, panel regression tests were carried out, comprising a temporal analysis from 1996 to 2016. With this study it was possible to estimate a significant relationship between Regulatory Quality and the HDI, in relation to GDP, Corruption Control, Stability Policy, Rule of Law and Voice and Responsibility were the indicators that influenced positively. The evidence thus indicates that the explanatory capacity of the model is better for GDP than for the HDI.
