Avaliação conceitual e síntese de ferramentas metodológicas na determinação da sensibilidade à erosão e inundação costeira

Resumo

A identificação de seções da costa sensíveis ao aumento do nível do mar é necessária para uma gestão mais eficaz da zona costeira, a fim de aumentar a resiliência e ajudar a reduzir os impactos. Porém, a diversidade de sistemas costeiros e as diferenças regionais de aumento relativo do nível do mar fazem com que a resposta para os fenômenos de erosão e inundação costeira não sejam uniformes no globo. Por isto, a avaliação da sensibilidade costeira assume o ponto de partida para a avaliação da vulnerabilidade. No entanto, desafios metodológicos são decorrentes desta difícil tarefa de compreender e avaliar a dinâmica dos ecossistemas costeiros. Além disso, inconsistências conceituais em torno do termo vulnerabilidade podem gerar incompreensões metodológicas e o emprego distraído de certas variáveis pode comprometer os índices de sensibilidade costeira. Este artigo se propõe a contribuir com uma base conceitual e metodológica destinada aos pesquisadores que irão iniciar na jornada de mapeamento da sensibilidade costeira; apresentando uma síntese das principais ferramentas de avaliação da vulnerabilidade e discutindo o significado das variáveis físicas mais utilizadas para a classificação da sensibilidade costeira. Independente da abordagem metodológica adotada, o pesquisador deve ter ciência das limitações da ferramenta, onde a escolha das variáveis é também uma questão de escala, pois o detalhamento das feições morfológicas e dos processos se faz necessário em escala local.

    Giseli Modolo Vieira MACHADO has B.S. (2004) in Geography from the Federal University of Espírito Santo and Master (2007) degrees in Geography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the field of Coastal Geomorphology. She also has a Ph.D. (2015) in Environmental Oceanography from the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil/University of Wollongong, Australia. Currently, she is a post-doctorate student in Geography at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil, and also a visiting researcher at the University od Wollongong, where is working in the field of sedimentology, with emphasis on coastal sedimentation and coast flooding susceptibility.

    Jacqueline ALBINO has a B.S. (1988) in Geography from the State University of Rio de Janeiro; Master (1993) in Geography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a Ph.D. (1999) in Geosciences (sedimentary geology) from the University of São Paulo, Brazil; and post-doctorate in Coastal Engineering and Vulnerability from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She is currently a Professor at the Federal University of the Espirito Santo (UFES), working in the Department of Oceanography, and the faculty of postgraduate programs in Environmental Oceanography and in Geography (UFES). She has experience in Geosciences with emphasis on coastal geomorphology, acting on the following topics: beach morphodynamics and coastal vulnerability.
