Rainfall Frequency and Intensity in The Northern Paraná State Region, Brazil

Abstract

Rainfall is the climatic attribute of greater expression and importance in the tropical climate regions due to the occurrence of high annual totals. This paper aims to analyze rainfall totals in the annual, monthly and daily scales, as well as the intensity and frequency of daily rainfall records using the quantil technique in localities of the northern Paraná region (NRP), Brazil. As a secondary aim, was evaluated the association between annual rainfall totals and the rainy days number (RDN) and its association of El Niño-South Oscillation (ENOS) events. Were used the rainfall series of five conventional weather stations for the 40-year period. The exploratory analyzes of the rainfall time series were performed in the R environment software version 3.3.2. It was highlighted the coincidence of years of rainfall and NDC that registrered less than 25% of quantiles with the occurrence of La Niña events. In contrast, it was noted that for the years of rainfall and total NDC greater than 95% of the quantiles were mostly related to the occurrence of El Niño events. Was observed the highest frequency of the highest daily rainfall records, for the quartiles of 75%, 95%, 99% and> 99%, in the period from October to March.
