The interview with Lydia Pelot-Hobbs was conducted in October 2024, during her visit to Brazil on the occasion of the 1st Conference on Abolition Geographies, organized in collaboration with the Graduate Program in Human Geography at the University of São Paulo. The conversation addresses the relationship between the university and social movements in the construction of abolitionist perspectives; the spatial dimension of processes of prison expansion; the intersections between Geography and racial capitalism; the links between the so-called 1973 oil crisis and mass incarceration in Louisiana; carceral humanism as an element of legitimation in the expansion of jails and detention centers in different parts of the United States; and the fundamental articulation between the police and the prison in the reproduction of the carceral state.
