Abstract

“Irish Materialisms: The Nonhuman and the Making of Colonial Ireland, 1690-1830”, written by Coleen Taylor, aims to apply the principles of New Materialism to history – specifically, Irish history during the long 18th century. Taylor weaves a narrative of the consolidation of the British colony in Ireland from the point of view of five non-human agents (or actants): metal, flax, spinning wheels, mud, and pigs. The author argues that, beyond their role in the colonial economy, these elements constituted affordances (according to James Gibson’s definition) which induced the formation of ideas, creative expressions and social relations in Ireland during the period. This review comments Taylor’s theoretical framework in light of historical epistemology and compare some of her conclusions with the historical context of pre-modern Ireland.
