“Irish Materialisms: The Nonhuman and the Making of Colonial Ireland, 1690-1830”, de Colleen Taylor, se propõe a aplicar os princípios do Novo Materialismo à História – especificamente, à história irlandesa no Longo Século XVIII. Taylor tece uma narrativa da consolidação da colônia britânica na Irlanda a partir do ponto de vista de cinco agentes (ou actantes) não-humanos: metal, linho, rocas, lama e porcos. Para além de seu papel na economia colonial, a autora defende que tais elementos constituíram affordances (seguindo o conceito de James Gibson) que induziram a formação de ideias, expressões criativas e relações sociais na Irlanda do período. Esta resenha comenta os fundamentos teóricos de Taylor à luz da epistemologia histórica e compara certas conclusões da autora com o contexto da Irlanda pré-moderna.
