Résumé

In August, 1816, Brazilian troops entered the Banda Oriental for
the second time in five years. The new turn of events dashed all prospects
for a Spanish-Portuguese effort against the insurgents of Buenos
Aires. Furthermore, it dealt a severe blow to the Spanish pacification
scheme in America and set in motion a wave of indignation and inflammed
passion among the Spanish nation. And for Continental Europe
it created the distinct possibility of another general conflagration.
