Psychosexuality, femininity, and gender

Abstract

Introduction: The term psychosexuality refers to the psychological aspects that suggest sexual activity and impulses. Influenced by cultural and psychological factors, psychosexuality is shaped by institutions and social pressures that reinforce hegemonic norms, especially heterosexuality. The objective of the study was to evaluate the understanding of gender identity and expression among medical students and its relevance for inclusive training. The aim was to deconstruct misogynistic stereotypes, providing opportunities for gender equality, health promotion, and validation of the human rights of the female subject. Material and Methods: Qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, conducted by IFMSA Brazil. It was conducted through an educational lecture and the application of questionnaires on gender and sexuality, applied before and after the lecture. The participants were students from a private university in southern Brazil over the age of 18. The data collected were tabulated for impact analysis, seeking to measure the evolution of the participants' understanding of the topics discussed. Results: Prior to the lecture, representations of femininity and masculinity were traditionally divided, with femininity being associated with delicacy, motherhood, and empowerment, and masculinity being linked to physical strength and leadership ability. Gender identity was mostly seen as birth sex, with only 60% recognizing it as a personal identity. After the event, perceptions diversified: femininity came to be seen as freedom and strength, and masculinity as something fluid. All participants began to understand gender identity as a personal issue, regardless of birth sex. The activity stimulated critical reflection, promoting the deconstruction of stereotypes and helping to create a more inclusive environment in which gender equality and autonomy of cis and trans women are valued. It is hoped that this vision will spread beyond the event, contributing to a more egalitarian society. Conclusion: The activity addressed psychosexuality, femininity and gender, promoting the empowerment of cis and trans women by increasing the understanding of identity and sexuality. It also questioned gender stereotypes, encouraging a more inclusive vision and promoting awareness of gender-based violence. This reflection contributes to the creation of safer and more supportive communities, in addition to enabling the improvement of future initiatives through critical analysis of the impacts on the academic community.
