The acknowledgment of social determinants is fundamental to provide a qualified health care service, which takes into account the reality experienced by different people, and to plan public policies and educational actions. Although scientific literature demonstrates this as one of the key points for the effectiveness of the health care provided, the course curriculum for healthcare professionals has historically been lacking in regards to this subject, which results in an inefficient link between social determinants and the professional’s clinical practice. In these terms, student initiatives taking place in the academic environment propose discussions about themes - such as sexuality, gender identity, racism and social inequalities - aiming to promote a critical education for the future professionals, questioning the current curricula established by universities, and bringing the civil community closer to the places of knowledge production.
