Introduction: Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are psychotropic drugs of the anxiolytic subgroup. In recent years many patients have become addicts and it is therefore essential to know their indications and their risks. Objective: To review the literature on BZDs, their mechanism of action, indications, side effects, in addition to user profiles and the need to review the importance of this drug’s deconstruction. Method: The following electronic scientific databases were consulted for literature review: NCBI / PubMed (National Center for Biotechnology Information) and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online). We searched articles from the 2014 to 2018. Results: Studies included in this research point to the need for stricter control over the indications and correct use of these psychopharmacological agents. Therefore, the qualification of prescribing professionals is relevant in order to limit the frequency of their chronic and indiscriminate use. In addition, this study draws attention to health programs aimed at guiding / educating the population about the influence of BZDs on quality of life, minimizing the harms of their inappropriate use. Conclusion: BZDs are used around the world and usually inappropriately, this impact on morbidity and mortality and contributes to the increase in public health resources spending.
