Introduction: The majority of university students present low levels of physical activity and their adherence tends to decrease with the passage of time and increase in assignments. In addition, musculoskeletal pain is common in these students, especially in the spinal region, and this pain can cause psychological and social damage. Objective: To verify the relationship between the physical activity level (PAL) and the occurrence of pain in university students. Method: The study is characterized as an integrative review. The searches took place in nine databases using the descriptors “pain”, “physical activity”, and “students”, and their equivalent terms. Initially, 596 articles were located. After removing duplicates and articles not related to the object of this study, eight articles were included for analysis. Result: The studies included a total sample of 40,638 university students, ranging in age from 18 to 26 years. Among the eight included studies, one concluded that PAL does not interfere with pain, two indicated that increasing PAL decreases pain, and in five studies, reducing PAL was observed to increase pain. Conclusion: This review provides preliminary evidence that physical activity can minimize the occurrence of pain in the university population. New epidemiological and clinical studies are needed to assess pain and physical activity levels in this population.
