Abstract

The present article is a cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study that aimed to assess the prevalence of suicide risk in individuals living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis who were treated at a gastroenterology clinic in southern Brazil. This study was part of a larger research project that evaluated the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The research utilized data from medical records, sociodemographic questionnaires, and adapted versions of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association, focusing on anxiety, depression, and suicide risk. These were assessed during interviews conducted during medical consultations from July 2021 to February 2022. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using SPSS 21.0. The results showed that suicide risk was present in 25.4% of the sample, with 86.7% of these individuals living with Crohn's disease, highlighting the importance of mental health in these patients and the need for multidisciplinary care with an emphasis on psychosocial factors.
