Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is a disease characterized by autoimmune degeneration of insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Thus, glycemic control in DM1 patients is difficult to achieve due to a complete insulin deficiency. Hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and ketoacidosis are common complications of DM1, and the stress of living with these disorders has been associated with detrimental effects on mental health and quality of life. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the quality of life and mental health of community-dwelling patients with DM1. Method: This was an analytical cross-sectional study involving adults with DM1. Mental health was assessed using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Quality of Life Assessment Questionnaire (SF-36). Results: Significant correlations were observed between elevated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and worse quality of life indices, as well as higher levels of anxiety, stress, and depression. Complications of DM1 impact mental health, increase cardiovascular risks, hospitalizations and healthcare costs, and reduce life expectancy and quality, treatment adherence, and the adequate glycemic control. Conclusion: The research highlights the importance of screening for mental disorders in patients with type 1 diabetes to promote treatment adherence and prevent complications.
