Abstract

Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition that causes widespread pain, impairs functionality, and is associated with factors such as stress  and  psychosocial changes. Objective: To investigate the impact of fibromyalgia on the functional capacity of  patients  treated at the Chronic Pain and Rheumatology outpatient clinics of a university hospital. Methods: This is a descriptive  cross-sectional study that included patients diagnosed with FM, to whom the Fibromyalgia  Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and the Stress Perception Scale-10 (PSS-10) were applied to assess the participants’ functionality and  stress.  Results: It  was  found  that  the sample  of  57  patients, predominantly women and aged between 51 and 65 years, revealed  impaired  functional capacity,  with  the impact of fibromyalgia  being more severe  in  activities that required physical  effort. Furthermore, stress was identified as a factor related to greater difficulty in daily activities,  while pain  intensity did  not  correlate significantly  with functional capacity. Conclusion: Fibromyalgia compromises functional capacity, especially in physical activities, with stress exacerbating limitations in patients’ daily tasks.
