Prevalence of neuropathic symptoms in diabetic patients evaluated in a specialty outpatient clinic in Alto Vale do Itajaí-SC

Abstract

Introduction and objective: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic clinical condition that comprising a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders, whose common characteristic is a persistent hyperglycemic state resulting from defects in insulin secretion or action. Among its main complications there is the diabetic neuropathy, present in 50% of diabetic patients during the course of the disease, with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) being the most prevalent. This study aimed at describing the DPN prevalence in patients treated at a Brazilian specialty clinic and verifying the odds ratio of possible factors associated to its development. Methods: Patients were evaluated using a questionnaire prepared by the authors, composed by clinical and epidemiological variables, associated to Neuropathic Symptom Score (NSS) and Neuropathic Impairment Score (NIS). The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social sciences (SPSS, version 26.0) and p≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The sample was composed by 49 patients, with a DPN prevalence of 36.7%. The mean age was 56.2±14.0 years old and the mean diagnosis time was 11.9±8.3 years. There was a predominance of female, Caucasian, married or in a stable union, with incomplete primary education, hypertensive, dyslipidemic and sedentary patients. Conclusion: There was a high DPN prevalence and there were statistically significant associations to marital status and glycemic control, and a higher prevalence of the disease was found among patients with coronary artery disease and smokers. There was conformity between NSS and NIS.
