Abstract

Introduction: Empathy is a multidimensional competence, encompassing cognitive and emotional components, essential to medical practice and amenable to development through pedagogical strategies. This study evaluated the impact of a brief fictional audiovisual stimulus on the empathic performance of medical students. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 224 students (1st–12th term) from a university center in Minas Gerais, Brazil (REC/UNIFAGOC Report No. 6,245,274), divided into exposed (n=92) and non-exposed (n=70) groups to a 1min37s video. Cognitive empathy was assessed using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (0–36 points) and analyzed by Poisson regression. Results: After exclusions, 162 participants (F=111; M=51; 25.3±6.9 years) were analyzed. Women scored higher than men (27.3±3.5 vs. 24.7±4.0; p<0.001). Video exposure increased female scores (27.8±3.0 vs. 26.7±3.9) and reduced male scores (23.9±4.2 vs. 26.1±3.2). Best performance occurred between 20–40 years. The gender×exposure interaction was significant (β=-0.131; p=0.007). Conclusion: Empathic performance varied by gender, age, and video exposure, suggesting that short audiovisual interventions may benefit specific groups. Continuous, tailored pedagogical strategies may enhance empathy development in medical education.
