Abstract

Objective: Investigate the association between total cholesterol levels and asthma severity in children and adolescents. A secondary objective was to investigate the association between low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) fractions and asthma severity. Methods: Case-control study related to the CAAE project: 62451822.9.0000.5436. Asthmatic children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years, both obese and non-obese, registered at the Jabaquara Polyclinic were evaluated. Patients with syndromes, heart disease, lung disease, degenerative diseases, or who used medication with effects on the central nervous system (CNS) were excluded. Weight, height, body mass index (BMI), abdominal circumference, and neck circumference measurements were obtained from all patients, with the following definitions: Eutrophic: 15 ≤ BMI ≤ 85th; Overweight: 85 < BMI ≤ 95th; Obese: BMI >95th. Serum levels of total cholesterol and its fractions were analysed in the electronic medical records; spirometry with bronchodilator and clinical evaluation of all patients. We considered the following as risk factors: total cholesterol level above 170 mg/dL; LDL above 130 mg/dL and HDL below 40mg/dL. Asthma severity was assessed by the amount of medication required to stabilise the patient according to GINA. All patients underwent spirometry with a short- acting bronchodilator. Results: A total of 136 children and adolescents were included, with a mean age of 10.1 years; 58.8% were male and 41.1% were female. Statistical analyses showed the following: Total Cholesterol (>170mg/dL) OR 1.02 (95% CI: 0.39–2.67; p=0.966); LDL (>130 mg/dL) OR 1.18 (95% CI: 0.07– 20.39; p=0.909); HDL (<40 mg/dL) OR 1.44 (95% CI: 0.29–7.06; p=0.656). Conclusion: There was no association between high total cholesterol levels and asthma severity, nor was there an association between elevated LDL levels or low HDL levels and asthma severity in this study.
