The author describes the clinical neurological evaluation of the newborn infant at term and pre-term, with special remarks on the most frequently used techniques in clinical practice, and the
neurological syndromes observed in the neonatal period. The developmental patterns found in normal children in the first years of life are described according to the major areas of development: motor, language, motor coordination and adaptative, along with the tests most frequently used for the evaluation of pre-school children.
