This article illustrates the development of the stereotactic apparatus since the early prototypes used in anatomical studies. There have been many changes since the first apparatus towards the functionality and simplicity; however the core concept of milimetric spatial localization on three dimension basis has been kept. Currently the development of brain atlases and their fusion to neuroimage techniques have improved the accuracy of spatial localization for the surgical approach making the procedures
reliable and the functional results, constant with less invasive techniques.
