The work that I have been doing about foreign travelers in Bahia in the nineteenth century is marked by a singularity: their approach about what they ate. The young Dutchman Ver Huell was a singular traveler, starting with involuntary permanence for almost three years in Bahia. Living indifferentsocialspaces, hemetthevariousplansof Bahian cuisine, especially that of the popular layers of Salvador. With small adversities, he spent most of his time in leisure and fun, also enjoying tasting the “tropical meats.” There are few travelers that, like Ver Huell, have adapted so well to the social reality and diet of the Baianos.
