Since the 1990’s we have witnessed a significant expansion of public institutions with the purpose to preserve and diffuse amateur and familiar films. This article’s purpose is to investigate in which context and circumstances these objects, conceived to remain in an intimate and familiar realm, begin to be considered as historical heritage. Through the privileged example of French public archives, we propose a consideration on the motivations, strategies and dilemmas siding these images in their course from private to public domain, from memory to history.
