Abstract

Since the end of the communist era, the artist and filmmaker Péter Forgács reappropriates amateur films in order to question and rewrite European history through other perspectives. This article proposes to analyse how the reediting of intimate visual memories and stories reshape the collective perception of the past in Forgács’s series Private Socialism: Either-Or (1989), Kádár’s Kiss (1997), and Class Lot (1997). In these films, how do amateur images renegotiate in the present the private and public tensions that determined life during socialism in Hungary?
