Abstract

In this work, we will discuss the foundation of neurophysiological concepts and mechanisms related to the perception and processing of what Edmond Costère called “Cardinality” and “Stability”. The objective of exposing and discussing such concepts and mechanisms lies in the expectation of launching theoretical bases that scientifically justify the interval organization approach based on Edmond Costère's main assumptions. The bibliography includes writings in the fields of Psychology of Music, Neuroscience, Psychophysics and Information Theory, as well as writings by composer theorists. We will conclude that Costère's empirical observations are supported by the scientific literature, including experimental data collected by contemporary researchers. We will understand, therefore, that his approach has scientific validity and, therefore, deserves both to continue being discussed in the scientific field and to be applied to artistic practice.
