This article presents a brief summary on the conditions of art about the sanctuary of Olympia, considered the religious and political center of the Greek world during the Archaic and Classical periods. The Olympic games are presented as part of a singularly Greek religious and political phenomenon in both periods. Within this perspective, the role of the Olympic games and the cult of Zeus in the mobilization of political elite groups and as affirmation of political, ethnic and regional identities is discussed in this paper
