The Monte de Trigo archaeological site, São Francisco do Sul/SC: material culture (ceramics and fine earthenware) in a comparative perspective

This article provides a comparative and interpretive analysis of the material culture from three 19th-century archaeological sites in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina: Monte de Trigo, Estaleiro 1, and Rocio Grande II. Drawing on the perspectives of the archaeology of capitalism and global historical archaeology, the study examines assemblages of locally produced ceramics and imported fine earthenware beyond their functional attributes. It aims to identify how patterns of consumption and use materialized the material habitus of rural households during this period. The comparative methodology revealed remarkable similarities across the assemblages, highlighting hybridity in local ceramic manufacturing techniques and integration into global commodity chains through English earthenware with transfer-printed decoration. The results suggest that these objects acted as active agents in the negotiation of identities and status, revealing interconnected socioeconomic dynamics that linked everyday life in Babitonga Bay to broader processes of modernity and colonialism in 19th-century Brazil.
