Abstract

In the celebrations of the 100 years of Oscar Niemeyer´s birth and the 50th anniversary of Lúcio Costa's project for Brasília, we revisited the "Nova Capital" in order to understand the different ideals bestow upon the city. The concept of Brasília and its construction put in confront different approaches in Urbanism. This contrast became cristal clear in the stances taken by Costa and Niemeyer. The first one, paying special attention to technic and plastic features, conceived an urban plan for an administrative city. The other, in charge with the proper building work of the capital changed the plan according to architetonic propositions and incorporated some architectural solutions that came from the pragmatism present in the building process. As a meeting point, Brasília, materializes the simbiotic relationship of both creators, developed through conflicts and dialogues.
