Introduction: Sepsis and septic shock are serious conditions, with the World Health Organization estimating 11 million cases annually and mortality rates of 30-40%. In Brazil, the incidence is approximately 200 thousand cases per year, with high lethality in public SUS hospitals. The research aims to fill gaps regarding sociodemographic and clinical associations. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of sepsis and septic shock in patients admitted to the ICU of a public hospital. Method: cross-sectional study, with data from August 2018 to July 2023, in a general hospital in Fortaleza-CE. To verify possible associations between the sepsis/septic shock outcome and the nominal/categorical predictive variables, the chi-square test or likelihood ratio test was used. The variables that were analyzed in the adjusted model were those with p<0.2. Result: 48.4% of patients had sepsis/septic shock, 51.7% were female, 32.8% of patients were aged 60 to 74 years and 42.8% were white. Regarding clinical variables, reduced level of consciousness (CNR) and oliguria were common organic dysfunction criteria. Conclusion: sepsis affects a variety of age groups and ethnic groups, and a significant proportion of cases require a long stay in the ICU.
