Caregiver burden and health literacy of family caregivers of persons on hemodialysis

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between sociodemographic characteristics, caregiver burden, and health literacy of family caregivers of persons on hemodialysis. Methods: This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study carried out with 50 family caregivers of hemodialysis patients in two dialysis centers in the city of Belo Horizonte/MG in 2022. The S-TOFHLA and Zarit Burden Interview version 12 items (ZBI-12) instruments were used to assess literacy and caregiver burden. Results: The average age was 51.4 years (SD = 12.6 years), with the predominant gender being female (46 participants, 92%). 31 (62%) participants had a chronic disease, and 30 (60%) were on continuous medication; 50% had adequate health literacy, 30% inadequate, and 20% borderline. No statistically significant association was found between the literacy and caregiver burden variables. In contrast, education level could be associated with literacy level (p = 0.003). Despite the absence of a statistical correlation, the level of burden observed in unemployed individuals and housewives exceeded that of caregivers with any form of income and/or employment. Conclusion: Literacy did not influence the levels of burden experienced by family caregivers of individuals on hemodialysis.
