The objective of this scientific research was to study the knowledge of medical students from a university in the countryside of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, about breastfeeding. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional observational study, using an online research form. The population consisted of medical students enrolled in the institution. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for statistical analysis of the data. Results: The social profile of the students interviewed was mostly female, between the ages of 18 and 24, and who did not have children. As for the semester of medicine they were in, the percentages varied considerably. In the answers to the questions about motherhood related to breastfeeding, there was a high percentage of correct answers, but in relation to the more specific questions about breastfeeding, the most students answered only five questions correctly of the nine totally asked. Despite that, it is observed that the majority - 62.3% - had already received training on the subject and that 80.3% had the college as the source of this knowledge. In relation to self-perception about knowledge on the subject, only 19.1% consider that they have enough knowledge about breastfeeding for their daily professional practice. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the average score obtained was satisfactory in all the questions applied in the form, which indicates an excellent teaching, with reservations about some gaps present in specific topics of breastfeeding. Therefore, in the latter case, it is necessary to stimulate the practice of periodic review of the content that has already been taught, as well as to have students in greater contact with the subject in professional practice within the college and in teaching hospitals, as well as in other fields of activity, in order to, together with active study, improve the rates of more specific knowledge, confidence and perception of learning about breastfeeding among medical students.
