Aim: To evaluate the relationship between the socioeconomic profile and the self-care of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attended an Endocrinology clinic at a university of southern Santa Catarina state. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in the 2nd semester of 2023. Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, aged 18 or over, who attended the endocrinology clinic of the Integrated Clinic of the University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina were studied. To assess self-care in diabetes, the Self-Care Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) was applied, and the socioeconomic profile was assessed using the Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria. The association between the socioeconomic profile and each question in the SCI-R questionnaire was evaluated using Pearson’s Chi-square test, and between the socioeconomic profile and the total self-care score using the ANOVA test, both with a significance level of 5%. Results: The SCI-R score had an average of 41.6 (± 8.4) and the predominant socioeconomic classes were C, D e E. An association was found between socioeconomic level and the use of insulin or medication at the right time (p=0.007), with greater frequency, generally or always, of this act among classes B (100%) and C, D and E (85.3%). The study found no association between socioeconomic level and total self-care score in type 2 diabetes mellitus (p=0.833). Conclusion: Individuals of lower socioeconomic levels generally or always used insulin or medications more frequently, demonstrating how essential an individualized approach to the individuals’ socioeconomic conditions is essential.
