Abstract

The play Calabar was written by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra in 1973. It was directed, on the same year, by Fernando Peixoto and censured a few days before it`s debut.  This article analyses aspects of the dramaturgy and staging in Calabar that associate directly to the experience of musicals undertaken by the Teatro de Arena after the Military Coup d' État in 1964, through the Joker System systematized by Augusto Boal. We shall investigate the way in which Calabar explicits the transformations taking place in the Brazilian political musical theater during the 1970s.
