Abstract

The article uses as starting point the autobiographical narrative of Mikhail Chekhov (1891-1955) in which he narrates the symbolic death of his alter ego, Don Quixote, in Paris, after the failure of the play Le Château s’éveille in 1931. An unsuccessful attempt of scenic realization of his “Theater of the Future,” this moment is observed as a turning point for the renewal of the pedagogical meaning in Chekhov’s work. Throughout the text, the importance given to the image as a phenomenon that articulates artistic, organic, and inanimate elements in pedagogy, and that reflects the constant presence of the issue of death in the personal trajectory of this legendary artist, stands out. The text references publications in diverse languages and original documents reunited in the Dartington Trust and The Elmgrant Trust Archive (Devon, England).
