Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the experiences of LGBTI+ individuals who assume parenthood, as well as the practices of healthcare professionals in providing care to this population. Between November 2023 and February 2024, seven online focus groups were conducted, five with LGBTI+ individuals and two with healthcare professionals. Participants were selected through social media, and the “snowball” method was used to expand the sample. Thematic analysis of the results revealed barriers to accessing equitable and inclusive healthcare, due to a lack of professional preparedness in addressing issues of gender and sexuality, and the cisheteronormative lens present in social relations. The study highlights the erasure of LGBTI+ parenthood in public policies and healthcare practices, as well as the need for further training on sexuality and gender in health curricula. The findings provide insights for promoting more just and welcoming care for this population.
