This paper brings an introduction to the theory of archetypes based on the revision of concepts developed
by Jung, Campbell and Durand, and analyzes its pragmatic use in the production of movies and TV series.
The study articulates reflections in the fields of anthropology, psychology, and arts, with the purpose of
defining what an archetype is and what its functions are in narratives. Lastly, the concept of archetype is applied in character construction, using as example the case of Walter White, protagonist of Breaking Bad. The result is a concept of archetype that can be used in creative processes and in the construction of characters in audiovisual narratives.
