Focused on representations of Portugal in the films directed by João Canijo, the reviewed book offers a literature review on the field of Portuguese identity studies, focusing on contributions by philosophers Eduardo Lourenço and José Gil. Subsequently, the author analyzes the narrative and aesthetic of Canijo’s body of work (including eight fiction feature films and one documentary) to theorize a “dramaturgy of violence” that would reflect contemporary Portugal.
